The American auto industry’s surge into making smaller, more efficient cars is making the market more diverse for average Americans and it’s also allowing for cars like the Chevrolet Aveo RS to come to market. Based on the tiny (but big from their commercials) Aveo, Chevy decided to showcase what the next generation Aveo could be.
As per the Detroit Motor Show, the Aveo RS features a 1.4L, 138hp turbocharged inline-4 mated to a six-speed manual turning 19-inch alloys. You can read the rest of the press hoopla below but we’re excited for possibly rippin’ around hot hatches from GM and Ford in the future. It’s about damn time!
The Aveo RS show car, finished in electric Boracay Blue, wears global Chevrolet design cues such as the dual element grille, round taillamps and fender flares, but designers turned up the attitude on the show car with low openings and a lower mouth trimmed in a combination of brushed and polished aluminum. Outboard fog lamps are integrated into an exaggerated brake-cooling inlet that flows into the front fender flares, creating an aggressive-looking face. Exposed headlamps, with their brushed aluminum structural surround, are inspired by the designers’ affection for motorcycles. The sleek side profile is characterized by uninterrupted body side lines, a high beltline and low roofline. The side mirrors with amber-colored turn signal indicators carry the same shape as the car and seemingly disappear into the profile. At first glance, the car actually looks like a three-door hatch because the rear door handles are discreetly located in the “C”-pillar area. With its matte black interior highlighted by gloss black, metallic and blue accents, the Aveo RS show car reflects as much attention to detail as the exterior. With the 2011 Chevrolet Aveo, General Motors is taking its small-car destiny in its own hands, bringing its Honda Fit fighter home to America--in terms of design and production.
The 2011 Aveo, to be shown at the 2010 Detroit auto show in concept form, is the second generation of the subcompact for General Motors. Unlike the previous Aveo, which was penned and engineered by GM Daewoo in South Korea, GM has designed this version in its U.S design studios and will build the Aveo not in Korea, but in a revitalized plant in southeastern Michigan.
The concept Aveo RS on display in Detroit wears some unlikely performance cues--it's a concept, after all--but underneath the flares and add-ons, there's a handsome new shape for the Aveo. Chevy says the design takes some influences from motorcycles, and is designed to appeal to younger buyers. A twin-piece grille and round taillamps tie it in with previous Chevy efforts; the show-car exaggeration takes the front end's grille and pulls it to the ground, with deep air intakes wrapping into flared fenders, aluminum-trimmed headlamps, and a sideview with hidden rear-door handles that give the Aveo a three-door appearance. At the back, the Aveo "concept" wears a roof-mounted wing and a center-mounted exhaust port. Inside, the Aveo concept's dash lifts some cues from the larger 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, from the vents that flank the center stack of controls to the gauge styling.
