Today is my penultimate day at CBS 2 and Fox 28. I took the day off yesterday, because I didn't want to drive in the snowpocalypse that had the whole state shut down. But today I thought, I want to go in. I want to finish up my work, see my friends, clean out my desk some more. So I ventured out, leaving Matt and the kids home, since Kirkwood and the Iowa City Schools were closed. I called the TV station to see if any crews were out doing stories on 380. They weren't, but they said that Steve and Brittany were out, and they would send them my way. While I waited, a man stopped, got out a shovel, and started digging out my tires. He tried to push me out, but couldn't quite make it. Then, another man, in a big pickup truck with All Eastern Iowa Seamless Gutters on the side, stopped and said with his chains, he could have me out in no time. He had me all hooked up when a Johnson County police officer came by and told him he couldn't do that; there is a tow ban, it would mess up the other traffic, and furthermore, he can't believe he left Arizona for this. Meanwhile, Steve and Brittany from the newsroom had arrived but had seen that I was taken care of, so they moved on. The man from All Eastern Iowa Seamless offered me a ride to the TV station in his King Ranch Ford, which is an incredibly comfortable ride. His company put leaf solutions gutters on my house this summer, and he also advertises on the TV station. The first man, the shoevel guy, was wearing a trucker cap that said "Olsens' Auto Salvage" but he told me that he didn't work there; it was just a hat. He was also wearing a jacket that said "Oelwein Hot Wheels (a car dealership)" on the back and had the embroidered name "Chuckie" on the front. But, he told me, he name is David; it's just a jacket. I thought the Oelwein part was interesting because I just finished reading the nonfiction book "Methland," which examines Oelwein's meth producing problem.
