10/24/09 – Afghan Journal #5
Congratulations to Paul and Laurel who were married last weekend. Paul, we are very excited to welcome you into the family and I look forward to celebrating with the two of you when I return. Also, congratulations to Lt Dave Thomander and his wife on the birth of their second daughter. I am stationed with Dave in Colorado and he will be replacing me here in Laghman on the next PRT. I also want to thank everyone that has sent me such thoughtful care packages, Kansas City BBQ sauce and Louisburg Cider Mill’s Apple Butter, home made cookies, pumpkin bread, Halloween Candy and decorations and all the other goodies from home that I cannot get from the chow hall or in an afghan street market. A special thank you to eleven year old Anders Person, who for his eleventh birthday party/ campout asked his friends in lieu of bringing gifts that they bring items for care packages for soldiers.
Thank you for your selfless gift to me and for lifting the hearts of myself and the troops in my unit. You are a fine American and great example of the American Spirit that our military has come to Afghanistan to share and protect. I am sure that your grandfathers that served in the military are proud of you and good luck with the rest of your football season. Go #14! I have now been in theater for 116 days. The weather is starting to cool down, it has been in the mid to low 80s during the days and down to the low 60s to high 50s at night. It has not rained again since the last time that I have written. There have been reports of snow in Kabul so I have hope that it will continue to cool off even more. It is finally beginning to feel more pleasant on a mission under the 75 lbs of our gear I wear. For the first time on Thursday I was not sweating while simply standing outside geared up. A few days ago there was also a 6.2 magnitude earthquake just after midnight on the 22 . The epicenter was somewhere in the Hindu Kush...
